My mother played it every Sunday from her cassette. I hadn't heard it since I was a little girl growing up in rural South GA. It brought back the "peaceful joy" I felt for the first time, from the Holy Spirit, when I was nine years old. It started to make sense. Summer's faith season was leading me to Fall's faith season of prayer, trust,"Be Still", and keep my faith.

Pursuit of Goal

What is an interest or passion you’d like to nurture and grow?

Well, I love to read aloud. Children's books and poetry are my favorites. I have pondered and procrastinated the idea of posting videos on You Tube or Vimeo for about a year. I took the initial step by creating a blog titled, "Narrator Gertha". However, it is still undone. This jam session has ignited/convicted me again to "just begin". Bonnie, I take courage in your words you posted:

I read a post today from a new blog I found; http://time-warp-wife.blogspot.com/2011/08/time-management-3-points-to-consider.html. It gave me some much needed perspective on how I've been feeling lately. Thank you Darlene!!

As our children are getting older, I am learning I must begin the process of learning to let go. It is proving quite difficult for me. Change isn't easy but it is necessary. God is teaching me that I must trust in the prayers I have prayed over our children. The Serenity Prayer truly blessed me today:

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

In the Chaos, I Find Rest

I'm not quite sure how to articulate my thought pattern at the moment. Numerous thoughts, ideas, doubts, fears, suggestions and possible solutions are running through my mind. I become overwhelmed. I begin to speak God's promises. I find rest.

Our son hasn't thought through his homework assignment. I ask, "did you read the directions carefully?" "No Mam". In a firm parental tone I begin; "haven't we told you to read the directions carefully; if you don't understand, ask questions. I get tired of"....I pause. Holding back my growing frustration, I begin to speak God's promises. I find rest.

In the chaos of my everyday life, I am thankful that I am, can and will continue to find rest in the community of God's word.

Intentions, Choice

It's Wk. 8! Here's what I've learned so far:

S. James 4:1-8

O. v.1 - We desire what we cannot have and want what we do not need
   v.2 - We have not because we ask not
   v.3 - However, when we ask, what are our true intentions?
   v.4 - We can't serve two masters.
   v.5 - His spirit resides in us
   v.6 - God gives grace to the humble and sets himself against the proud
   v.7 - Submit yourself to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you
   v.8 - Draw closer to God and he will draw closer to you.

A. Ask God to create in me a clean heart and renewed mind
   Be not a friend to the world. Remain humble.
   Remain "intentional":
   Guard my heart, filter my thoughts, emotions and actions

P. I must always pray.

P.S. I admire the promise/motto Courtney ("Walk with the King") and Angela ("Love God Greatly") leave us with when we visit. After much thought and prayer, I was given a promise that spoke to my heart:

Discern and Guard

Hello!

It's Wk. 7! Here's what I've learned so far:

S. - James 3: 13-17

O. - v.13- A truly wise man is humble and noble in deed and action.

v.14 - Don't give pride to bitterness, jealousy, and strife

v. 15 - This wisdom is earthly, not of God

v. 16 - Where bitterness, jealousy and strife reside, there is confusion.

v. 17 - Discerning spiritual wisdom from earthly wisdom is priceless.

God's wisdom is: pure, peace-loving, considerate, submissive,

full of mercy, good fruit, impartial and sincere.

Titus 2 -- Project #9: A Self-Controlled Tongue

This week, let’s use our words only for good. No complaining. No harsh tones. No negative, hurtful speech.

I know that this may be hard for some of you. Or maybe a little too big. If you feel like this challenge is too high, then focus on one particular area (complaining, harsh tones, etc…) and try to rid your speech of it this week!

I am continuing my "fruit of the spirit" journey. I am better but I have yet to bring this to fruition.

Update: Since the challenge, I have been "intentional". I paused before I spoke. Especially after I told our son to clean his room and it was not done. I was mindful to take a deep breath and use a gentle yet firm tone. I am better and experiencing a "fruit filled" disposition(:. God, I thank you!

Faith,Obedience, Action

Didn't link a post for week 4:(. I'll get it done soon. Here's what I've learned so far in Wk 5:

S. James 2:14-22

O. v.14 - I have faith but my actions are sometimes contrary to God's word.

v.15 - If someone needed food/clothing

v.16 - Words alone do not provide. I must act.

v.17 - Faith must be coupled with action(s)

v.18 - People will see your faith by your works and vice versa.

v.19 - Demons tremble. They fear and understand God's power

v.20 - Faith without "ACTION" is dead, worthless, futile.

v.21 - Abraham had FAITH and was OBEDIENT.

v.22 - His faith was not dead. It was complete when he acted on it.

A. I must remain faithful, obedient and be a "doer" of the word.

Provide help when their is a need. Teach.

P. I must alway stay in prayer.

What I Wished Someone Told Me About Marriage

Well....I wish someone had told me how hard it was going to be.

I wish someone had told me how much I would have to "die" to myself once we had children.

I wish someone had told me that I might grow in one direction and he may grow in another.

I wish someone had told me how priceless it is that I must "respect" my husband and he will give me the "love" I need/desire.

Undeniably, while on this marriage journey, I can honestly say I am and continue to become a better wife/mother. I understand what it really means to sacrifice and see with "unconditional eyes". How important it is to communicate what you need and not expect him/her to "already know". I am glad, even through the dark and uncertain times, we are still in love.

   v.22.) "Act" on God's word. "Listen" means to HEAR and DO.
   v.23-24.) We forget God's word when we don't act/practice/listen/obey it.
   v.25.) When I "listen", I am BLESSED and forever changed(:

I plan to make Banana Nut Bread with the family. I love the aroma and the "I'm Home" feeling it brings.

Last week's Update: Our family decided to watch movies and cuddle in the living room. Halfway through, I hear snoring and deep breathing from my husband and our daughter:). It was a good time. However, we didn't have a pillow fight. No reason, just didn't happen. Overall, the tenderness and togetherness, we enjoyed!!

I Accept Grace and Defeat Guilt

Bonnie, these sentences from your post,"Are you Motivated by Grace or Guilt? Shake Off Feelings of Guilt":

1.) Giving thanks means I have to let go of trying to fix the past -- and start focusing on the changes God wants me to make in the future.

2.) Being thankful calls me to live as beloved and favored child through my Heavenly Father’s eyes -- rather than holding an angry or frustrated attitude towards my imperfections.

is how I overcame my feelings of guilt. Without accepting/ believing God's promise of grace, I would remain unmotivated to change my thought and choice patterns.

Cultivating Inner Wisdom

It is vital I spend "quiet time" with God. This cultivates inner wisdom. I can always tell when I haven't been diligent. My disposition and perspective changes. I am so thankful to be a part of GMG. I know I made a wise decision.

Week #4 -- I am in for pillow fights, tenderness, and back rubs. My husband enjoys being "fed" back rubs(: ! I am thankful our children still love giving and receiving hugs and kisses. ( ages 12, 9) I tell them to me their hugs and kisses are a "priceless treasure". We love to watch movies and play board games. We will be sure to load up this week.

Challenge Update: I haven't consistently lit my candles of peace but, I have prayed for peace in our home and hearts daily. I've played soft, calming music. I de-clutter mentally, daily and I am still working on physically de-cluttering. I see the results of "intentionally" being gentle,and self-controlled evokes peace in my family.

I Am Going to Pass My Test!

In my quiet time, I am continuing to study a series by Pastor Joyce Meyer, called "Guard Your Heart".
I've learned that no matter what, I have to trust God. God's test are given to produce trust, faith, stability and patience. Some of the test Pastor Joyce spoke of were:

*The Wilderness Test (Israelites) -- When you feel completely dry and encounter one trial after another.

**Passing Criteria? -- Rejoice -- Habakkuk 3:18-19
¹⁸Yet I will rejoice in the Lord; I will exult in the [victorious] God of my salvation!^(A)

¹⁹The Lord God is my Strength, my personal bravery, and my invincible army; He makes my feet like hinds' feet and will make me to walk [not to stand still in terror, but to walk] and make [spiritual] progress upon my high places [of trouble, suffering, or responsibility]! For the Chief Musician; with my stringed instruments

*The Trust Test -- When our circumstances don't make sense, we're hurt, clueless and life seems unfair

**Passing Criteria? -- Trust God -- Know that God is in control and he won't place more on us than we can bear.

*The Judas Kiss Test (Jesus and his disciple Judas) (one of the hardest and most important) -- When someone you trust betrays and rejects you.

**Passing Criteria? -- "Don't let it stop you. Keep your eyes on God and you will accomplish your purpose"

We can be assured that at some point, like Jesus, we will be let down and rejected by a loved one.

When "going through" tests I often wonder when I'll see the light. But as always, I trust in his promise that he will never leave me or forsake me. Hebrews 13:5 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. With his grace and mercy, I know each time, I will pass my test!!

What Clutter?

When I look at my clutter of homeschooling materials, the stacks of mail on the right side of my kitchen table and the stacks of books in our bedroom; I tell myself, "out of mind, out of sight". I definitely need this challenge(: .

I like the 20 minute suggestion. It doesn't allow me much think time and I won't become tempted not to throw anything away.

On the other hand, my spiritual clutter is diminishing and I am so thankful. Time to UN- clutter!!!!

Classical it is!

When I was in high school in 19--:-), I found classical music very calming. It allowed me to think. Our children are used to it and seem to like it.

The second part of the challenge, gentleness, lines up with my GMG (Good Morning Girls) goal. I'm growing. The candles are lit and I'm "being intentional". Well, I'm off to create my classical station on Pandora.com.

The Parable of the Sower

Please excuse my tardiness Girls....

As I've stated in my previous posts, I am on my journey to bearing the fruit of gentleness and self-control. God gently spoke to my spirit and said, "you must work on your heart". I recently received a CD/DVD/Teaching Note Set from Joyce Meyer Ministries titled; "Guard Your Heart". I have been a follower of her ministry for a few years. She is such an inspiration to me. As I began reading, the first scripture (promise) was:

Proverbs 4:23: (AMP)

²³Keep and guard your heart with all vigilance and above all that you guard, for out of it flow the springs of life

I must keep a clean heart. In her teaching Pastor Joyce states, "if we maintain correct heart attitudes, our hearts will be clean and life will flow from us". As I continued to read, I began to summarize Luke 8:4-15 - "The Parable of the Sower". Jesus is telling the disciples the story of a planter sowing his seeds. He told of how some of the seeds fell along the roadside, some fell on the rocks, some fell in the thorns and some fell in soil. In my understanding, Jesus is speaking of his words as seeds and our heart is the soil. When I attended World Changers Church International, I'd heard the term "good ground" often. I thought it only meant giving to a church with an anointed pastor. Today, in reading this teaching, my perspective has been greatly broadened. I now understand that a person's "faith filled heart" (soil) is "good ground". That's where God's seeds are sown, grown, and harvested. All I have to do is believe in and apply God's word. On my journey, I must vigilantly guard my heart with his word (seeds) to allow complete fruition.

My favorite promise from the bible is Phil.4:13- "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."

Times in my life have forced me to lean on and completely abandon myself to my faith. I look back on some of my life experiences/trials and say, "I thank you Lord". If I had not gone through these things, I wouldn't have changed/grown. Without his unconditional love and truth, I know I couldn't sustain. My journey is still unfinished but as long as "I walk by faith and not by sight, I know I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." (:

Day #1-- Candles of Peace

At 6:17 am, I lit two candles. (I decided to use what I had.) As I lit each candle I prayed a prayer of peace for my husband, our children and myself. I began to immediately think about "being intentional". For me, it is a visual reminder to focus on God and all of his promises.

Mornings are hectic because our children are back in public school. My disposition with our children was gentle and self-controlled. They were peaceful. My husband was calm and loving. I had peace and discovered a sense of motivation. This morning got off to a peaceful start.... I'm thankful!

Today in my quiet time, I searched for God's promises on health, marriage, healing, gentleness, self-control, and anger. His word is truly a weapon. I'm getting better. Yes, I still trip and stumble but I am not falling as hard as I used to:). I know his word is taking root. I am happy and blessed this day:)! Until next time....

Letting Go of Worry

Worrying is a constant thorn in my side. As you stated in your post, I can pray and say I left it at God's feet. But, within five to ten minutes, I worry; How long is God going to take? Did he hear me? Why am I still worrying? LOL:-)

I am currently in my journey to bear the fruit of gentleness and self control. I engage in negative dialogue with myself when I fail to be gentle or self controlled. As I build my relationship with God, I see he is giving me strength and wisdom. He is molding, challenging, listening, and loving me. I must learn to get out of my own way and trust him. It's not going to happen overnight but I know if I don't give up, it will surely come to pass. I have faith in these promises and as he said, his word does not lie.

Hebrews 10:35
Do not, therefore, fling away your fearless confidence, for it carries a great and glorious compensation of reward.

Matthew 11:30
For My yoke is wholesome (useful, [James Moulton and George Milligan, The Vocabulary.] good--not harsh, hard, sharp, or pressing, but comfortable, gracious, and pleasant), and My burden is light and easy to be borne.

Hello!

As I stated from my previous "Women in the Word Wed." post, I am still focusing on bearing the fruit of gentleness and self control. In my quiet time today, I revisited my personal journal and read upon an entry that focuses on my goal.

Entry: 4/28/10-- "I was reading a book I picked up from the Dollar Tree titled, 101 Ways to Simplify Your Life. Way #95, "Have Faith in the Process", spoke to my spirit. I liked these words:

"You may not be able to figure it all out. It's simpler to place it in God's hands and trust the process. Let things unfold as they will and allow God to lead every step of the way."

When I am not gentle or let my emotions get the best of me, I beat myself up about it. Nobody's perfect. I must bring those thoughts into captivity and think positively. (2 Corinthians 10:4-5 - "For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.")

I must renew my mind. I'm gettting better and I must continue to "Have Faith in the Process".

I am sooo excited to begin again with GMG:-)!!!!. I have begun reading The Power of a Woman's Words by Sharon Jaynes. I have been truly humbled, gained insight, and given a new perspective. I was moved by these words:

"The tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity" (James 3:6 NASB). "It can only be tamed by the power of the Holy Spirit".

"A mother's support means a great deal to her child. She is an encourager whose voice can be heard echoing in the distance, pumping courage and confidence into her children's hearts. She's the cheerleader on the sidelines who knows that an uplifting word, offered at the right moment, might make the difference between her children finishing well or collapsing along the way."

"There are times in any friendship when confrontation is necessary, but we must always make sure that the confrontation is wrapped in prayer and tied with the lovely bow of love. If we take any joy whatsoever in the process, then we must stop and check our motives and attitudes."

Lastly, where my bookmark stands: "Powerful words are not caustic words. They are gentle, tender words wrapped in an attitude of love. Paul wrote to the Colossians, "As God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience." (Colossians 3:12)

Respect to my husband means asking myself the question, "How would James feel if I did?" and vice versa.

I am continuing to learn and grow in the area of respect. I realized I must submit to my husband. The thought of submitting to my husband was not easy for me. After many hard times and trials in our marriage I realized how completely clueless I was. Submission is not being a doormat. It is the total opposite. I've found how much closer I have become to my husband because I chose to submit.

I have learned that when a woman doesn't feel loved by her husband, its because her husband doesn't feel respected.

When I read this to my husband, he smiled from ear to ear:)! I am sooooo thankful for him.

My Prayer(s)

My husband and I are a mismatched pair when it comes to faith/religion. I believe and he doesn't. I continuously pray for his salvation. I know nothing is impossible with God and one day, my prayer will be answered. With that being said, each morning as he leaves for work, my prayer states: "I plead the blood of Jesus over my husband. God, protect him to and from each destination that he may ponder." I am thankful my husband is a great provider, caring father, and a loving husband. Not a day goes by that I don't confess these promises:

Acts 16:31:
³¹And they answered, Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ [^[a]give yourself up to Him, ^[b] take yourself out of your own keeping and entrust yourself into His keeping] and you will be saved, [and this applies both to] you and your household as well.

Well, we didn't have a wedding or a honeymoon. We got married at the Madison County Courthouse in Huntsville, AL in 1996. Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures to share either. I remember being nervous and happy all at the same time. I learn something new everyday and maintaining a healthy marriage and family is hard work. It was one of the happiest days of my life:-)!!!

The Cook's Dating Story

My husband James and I met in 1992 at Lurleen B. Wallace State Jr. College in Andalusia, AL. I was 19. He's from Mobile, AL and I'm from a little town forty-five minutes South of Albany, Ga called Morris, Ga.
At the time, I was dating someone else. Consequently, I found out he was seeing another girl besides me. I was hurt, a little. However, in my heart , I liked James from the start. I used to watch him in the backyard from my bathroom window of our apartment complex. ( Our college didn't have dorms so we lived in apartments) I wanted to make sure that he liked me too because I didn't want to get hurt again. I would speak and we'd oddly end up in the same places. Later, I discovered he was watching me as well:-).

We couldn't stand to be away from each other. He was always on my mind. I love how he would always be there when I needed him, give me what I needed and put me first. I graduated in 1992 from LBW and transferred to Alabama A&M University in Huntsville, AL. We'd write letters and had an ENORMOUS phone bill:-). We were miserable apart. But, being who he is, he transferred to Athens State to be near me. I love him for that. I miss that feeling and that energy.

I'm going to let him know/show him just how much I love and appreciate him. He's such a remarkable provider for our family.

This is us 14 years and two children later.

It took me awhile to get here. I joined a Good Morning Girls http://goodmorninggirls.squarespace.com (created by Courtney -Women Living Well and hosted with her friend Angela) group in the fall and I am participating in the summer session as well. It has brought me so much hope and joy. I have been contemplating creating a virtual journal to share my "quiet times" for awhile. I was nudged by my husband to start one online but I'm not one to pour my heart out for the world to read. Then, I started thinking about our children. Being "digital natives", I wanted to allow them access to my virtual journal. I'm glad I decided to do it. I find when I tithe the start of my day to God, I'm even tempered and patient (for most of the day_;-)). I can feel and hear the Holy Spirit speak to the spirit that abides in me. I have much work to do on myself and I am glad I chose not to do it alone. My favorite bible promise is Phil. 4:13-- "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me".
